Up Those Beats!

Updated: Feb 17, 2018

Anytime you are listening to music while working out, make sure it fits the desired intensity level. For example, it is counter productive to listen to anything slow or easy listening while doing cardio. Calm music will slow your heart rate and, most likely, make your mind wander and lose focus. This is the same reason why reading or zoning out to the television is discouraged.

This doesn't mean that your playlist needs to be high bpm techno or pop but it does mean that you need to choose music that energizes you. Sometimes, I like to run to what I call my "Moody Playlist". It has a mixture of soul music, nostalgic songs, Adele and so forth. It works because it brings up emotion, determination, and strength. For resistance training I usually turn to Spotify's playlist called HIIT-Pop.

In closing, make sure you are paying attention to what you are listening to and if it serves the current activity. The goal is to remain focused and motivated! Get that heart beating with the right beats!
